New members bring expertise in computer science, engineering and college administration
Oregon Health & Science University's governing body, the OHSU Board of Directors, has expanded from seven to 10 members as a result of OHSU's merger with the Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology. Joining the board are C. Scott Gibson and Keith Thomson, former members of OGI's Board of Trustees with backgrounds in technology and engineering, and rural health advocate Mary Decker.
"These new members bring a wealth of experience to our board," said Peter Kohler, M.D., president of OHSU. "They are accomplished leaders whose expertise is a welcome addition to our already strong governing body."
Gibson, who chaired OGI's board, is chairman of Gibson Enterprises in Lake Oswego. He began his career with Intel Corporation and co-founded Sequent Computer Systems, serving as president of Sequent from 1983 to 1992. Gibson also serves as a director of nine high-tech companies and two nonprofit boards, including that of the OHSU Foundation. Trained as an electrical engineer, he earned bachelor's and M.B.A. degrees from the University of Illinois. Gibson lives in Lake Oswego, Ore.
Thomson is the retired vice president and Oregon site manager for Intel. He joined the company in 1969, one year after it was founded. Prior to that he held a variety of executive and managerial positions at Intel, mostly in manufacturing. Thomson earned a bachelor's degree from California State Polytechnic University and an M.B.A. from the University of Santa Clara. He serves on several civic and corporate boards and committees, and recently was named a trustee of OHSU Foundation. He also is a commissioner for the Port of Portland, and chairs Gov. John Kitzhaber's task force for implementing school reform. Thomson lives in Washington County.
Decker is a retired college administrator whose career in student services in higher education began in 1962. She held positions at Stanford University, Scripps College, University of California-San Diego and the San Diego Community College District before retiring in 1988 as executive dean of student services. A Portland native, she relocated to the Oregon coast and has been an active member of numerous public service organizations ever since. She served a seven-year term on OHSU's Oregon Pacific AHEC board of directors and currently is a member of Oregon's Statewide AHEC Advisory Committee. Decker holds a bachelor's degree in speech and sociology from Northwestern University, and a master's in speech and education from Stanford University. She lives in Otis, Ore.
OHSU directors are appointed by the governor; three are mandated: OHSU's president (Kohler), a member of the Oregon State Board of Higher Education (currently Thomas Imeson) and an OHSU student (currently Annette Matthews). Other board members are Fredrick Buckman, Portland, chairman; Patricia Smith, Bend, vice chairwoman; former U.S. Sen. Mark Hatfield, Portland; and Michael Thorne, Portland.
