Portland, Ore.
An internationally recognized leader in robotic heart surgery, Ralph J. Damiano Jr., M.D., chief of cardiac surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, will be the guest speaker at the seventh annual lecture of the Heart Research Center at Oregon Health & Science University. Damiano will speak at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, in the OHSU Auditorium; the lecture is free to the public.
Damiano performed the first robotically assisted coronary artery bypass graft procedure in North America last fall. The robotic surgical devices allow for smaller and more precise incisions. He also is a leader in developing "off-pump" techniques to operate on a beating heart. These innovations hold out the promise of reduced risk, lower cost and faster recovery time for the 700,000 patients who undergo open-heart surgery each year in the United States.
The Heart Research Center at OHSU, which is sponsoring Damiano¹s talk, conducts a research program with 100 researchers supported by $25 million in public and private grants. The research focuses on genetic and prenatal factors of heart disease, as well as cardiovascular problems in adulthood.
The lecture is supported in part by the American Heart Association, Northwest Affiliate, and Davis Wright Tremaine. For more information about the lecture or the Heart Research Center, call 503 494-2382 or visit www.ohsu.edu/chrc.
