Oregon Health & Science University has recruited the chief executive officer of hospitals and clinics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Mark Penkhus, M.B.A., M.H.A., to become vice president of administration, reporting to OHSU President Peter Kohler, M.D.
Penkhus has spent the past two decades as a senior executive in academic medical centers and health care systems nationwide. Capitalizing on his experience as a leader, facilitator and "change agent," Penkhus will work closely with the soon-to-be appointed chief financial officer and Kohler. Their objective is to further align the institution's organizational strategies, goals and operational objectives with its mission of healing, teaching, discovery and community service.
"Mark has a proven track record in collaborative planning, leadership development, and financial and operational performance improvement," said Kohler. "He is a superb addition to our executive management team."
Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) comprises Vanderbilt University Hospital, Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital, Psychiatric Hospital at Vanderbilt, a children's hospital, clinic, and medical and nursing schools. As CEO of VUMC's hospitals and clinics, Penkhus was responsible for hospitals and clinics operations, and worked closely with the vice chancellor for health affairs, the deans and department chairs from the schools of medicine and nursing in support of clinical services, research and academic development. He also helped recruit five new department chairs.
Previously Penkhus was a partner and health care business consultant for five years at Ernst & Young LLP in Washington, D.C.. As such, Penkhus provided professional health care services, including strategic and programmatic development, financial and operational assessment and improvement, and integration and consolidation services to academic medical centers and health care practices nationwide.
Prior to Ernst & Young LLP, Penkhus served as executive vice president and chief operating officer at Harper Hospital, Detroit Medical Center, Mich. He has a master's in business administration from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, N.Y.; a master's in hospital and health care administration from the University of Iowa; and is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Warton School of Business Advanced Management Program.
Penkhus is a member of the Blue Ridge Academic Health Group, which studies and reports on ways to improve our health care system and enhance the ability of academic medical centers to sustain themselves while adhering to their multiple missions of education, patient care, research and public service. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and Project HOPE, the international humanitarian organization based in Washington, D.C., and a member of the American Hospital Association and the American Management Association.
