OGI School of Science & Engineering Receives Nearly $1.5 Million in Recent Grants

   Portland, Ore.

OHSU's OGI School of Science & Engineering, based in Hillsboro, Ore., has recently received the following grants/donations:

A four-year, $1,182,335 grant from the National Institutes of Health for Matthew Sachs, Ph.D., associate professor in biochemistry and molecular biology in the OGI School of Science & Engineering. Sachs will study the mechanisms of protein synthesis using a fungus called Neurospora and yeast. Better understanding how proteins are made may someday lead to new techniques that will boost antibiotic efficiency in humans.

$168,500 in donated software from Microsoft Great Plains Business Solutions. The software will be used by students in the Department of Management in Science and Technology's master's program.

$111,054 in equipment from Agilent Technologies to the laboratory of Jody House, Ph.D., assistant professor in electrical and computer engineering in the OGI School of Science & Engineering. The equipment will be used by House and her graduate students for sensor development and research on MEMS (MicroElectroMechanical Systems), which have a number of applications in the biomedical, automotive and oil industries, among others.

The OGI School of Science & Engineering (formerly the Oregon Graduate Institute of Science & Technology) became one of four specialty schools of Oregon Health & Science University in 2001. OHSU's OGI School of Science and Engineering has 63 faculty and more than 300 master's and Ph.D. students in five academic departments. For more information, go to www.ogi.edu.
