Nationally Recognized Faculty Join OHSU's OGI School of Science and Engineering

   Portland, Ore.

Four new computer science and engineering professors indicative of where field is going

Four scientists who are nationally-recognized for their cutting-edge research have joined the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Oregon Health & Science University's OGI School of Science and Engineering, based in Hillsboro, Ore.:

Juliana Freire, Ph.D., joins the School of Science & Engineering as an assistant professor. She is exploring ways to better manage data using the Web. Before joining the School of Science & Engineering, Freire was on the technical staff at the Database Systems Research department at Bell Labs. She received a bachelor's degree from the Federal University of Ceará in Brazil, and her master's and doctoral degrees from the State University of New York at Stonybrook. She will be part of the School of Science & Engineering's Systems Software Lab, and the Database and Object Technology Lab.

John Matthews, Ph.D., comes to the School of Science & Engineering as an assistant professor. Matthews specializes in formal verification technology. He earned a bachelor's degree in computer science, math and statistics from the University of Washington, and his doctorate from the Oregon Graduate Institute of Science & Technology (now OHSU's OGI School of Science & Engineering). Most recently, he worked at the Cambridge Research Center of Hewlett Packard labs. Matthews will be a member of the Pacific Software Research Lab.

Melanie Mitchell, Ph.D., joins the School of Science & Engineering as an associate professor. Mitchell is studying how systems in nature obtain, process, and communicate information so she can develop computer systems that can adapt to their environment. At the school, Mitchell will be researching machine learning and evolutionary computation. Mitchell received her doctorate from the University of Michigan where she taught briefly. She also was a research professor and director of institutional outreach at the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico, and a staff member in the biophysics group at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Cláudio Silva, Ph.D., joins the School of Science & Engineering as an associate professor. He specializes in computer graphics, visualization and applied computational geometry. Silva received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the Federal University of Ceará in Brazil, and master's and doctoral degrees in computer science from the State University of New York at Stonybrook. He completed a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellowship at Sandia National Laboratories, and most recently was a principal member of the technical staff at AT&T Research Labs. He also worked at the visual and geometric computer group at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center. Silva expects to collaborate extensively with the school's Environmental Science and Engineering Department and with OHSU's Heart Research Center.
