The Oregon Health & Science University School of Nursing was well-represented at the 19th annual Oregon Rural Health Conference 2002. Honored for their outstanding contributions and leadership in developing and promoting rural health initiatives were:
Jeanne Bowden, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N., professor and associate dean of the OHSU School of Nursing, La Grande Campus
Bowden, along with Sue Briggs and Kendall Baxter, received the Oregon Primary Care Association's Outstanding Leadership Award for her role in developing the Rural Frontier Delivery distance education program for place-bound students in Eastern Oregon, and for providing support and direction for the R.N./B.S. program and the graduate programs leading to master's and doctoral degrees.
In addition, Bowden received the Rural Oregon Award of Excellence from the Rural Development Initiatives, on behalf of the Cove-Union-Powder Medical Association, for her work in developing the Union Family Health Center, which provides much-needed health care services to more than 3,500 Union County residents from Union, North Powder and Cove.
Nancy Findholt, R.N., M.N., assistant professor of nursing in the OHSU School of Nursing, La Grande Campus
Findholt received the Oregon Primary Care Association's Outstanding Collaborative Effort Award for her work in developing the Health Network for Rural Schools, a School of Nursing program in which nurse practitioners make home visits in all five of Union County's rural elementary schools, offering free community education and wellness programs ranging from storytelling and nutrition to blood pressure checks.
The Rural Health Conference is sponsored by the OHSU Office of Rural Health, the Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Systems, the Oregon Rural Health Association and the Oregon Primary Care Association.
