School of Medicine Dean Named President of National Aging Federation

Christine Cassel, M.D., dean of the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine, has been elected president of the American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR). She'll assume her new position in December 2002.

AFAR makes research grants, and educates the general public about the aging process and research. Since its founding in 1981, AFAR has made grants of more than $47 million to more than 1,400 young researchers and students to conduct biomedical studies on aging and age-related disease. Funds for the AFAR grants come from foundations, corporations and individuals.

 

Professor of Psychiatry Receives Two Prestigious National Awards

Dale Walker, M.D., professor of psychiatry, and public health and preventive medicine in the OHSU School of Medicine, has been awarded the prestigious 2002 Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI).

Walker was lauded by NAMI for his substantial contributions and leadership in meeting the needs of children and adolescents, racially and ethnically diverse people, and other underserved groups. This award acknowledges Walker's national activities as well as his substantial efforts here in the state of Oregon.

In addition, Walker has received the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) esteemed Warren Williams Award in recognition of his dedication and outstanding contributions to the advancement of psychiatry and the delivery of the highest quality of care to people with mental illness. The APA's Area 7 Council voted unanimously to present this award to Walker. In particular, Walker was honored for his work with Native Americans struggling with substance abuse. His service to this population was deemed "beyond meritorious."
