Hudson's Bay High School in Vancouver, Wash., leads the campaign

Kids Making Miracles celebrates its 11th anniversary this year with a campaign to support expansion of Doernbecher Children's Hospital's Kenneth W. Ford Northwest Children's Cancer Center. Participating students have raised $360,000 toward the expansion effort while helping kids in their own communities.

Through the regionwide, school-based service program, elementary, middle and high school students raise money for Doernbecher Children's Hospital. This year thousands of students from 162 schools throughout Oregon and southwest Washington raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Doernbecher. They participated in fund-raising programs and events ranging from penny drives and root beer float sales to elaborate pageants.

Top-contributing schools include Hudson's Bay High School (Vancouver, Wash.), $64,000; Tillamook High School (Tillamook, Ore.), $30,000; McMinnville High School (McMinnville, Ore.), $15,000; South Albany High School (Albany, Ore.), $14,000; Gervais High School (Gervais, Ore.), $7,000; and Dallas High School (Dallas, Ore.), $6,800.

"These are kids with amazing drive and passion," said Tamara Thompson, director of programs and community events for the Doernbecher Children's Hospital Foundation. "It's awe-inspiring to realize that Oregon and Washington kids are working nights and weekends in the service of other children, most of whom they'll never know."

"Supporting Doernbecher is a tradition that gets stronger every year at our school," said Hudson's Bay High School senior Alex Groher, two time co-chair of the Kids Making Miracles program. "About ten years ago a popular student at this school died from a heart condition. People still talk about him, and even though most of us didn't know him personally, his story continues to inspire us. We like the idea of doing something fun that will ultimately help other kids."

Planned expansion of the Kenneth W. Ford Northwest Children's Cancer Center will include a new 22-bed cancer inpatient unit, an infusion center for chemotherapy treatments, an enlarged cancer outpatient clinic, and four new pediatric intensive care rooms. With a four-fold increase in its pediatric cancer population within the past six years and additional growth expected, Doernbecher must expand its pediatric cancer facilities to meet the region's growing needs.

"Right now Doernbecher cares for more than 85 percent of the region's kids with cancer, and that percentage will only increase," said Sue Nicol, executive director of the Doernbecher Children's Hospital Foundation. "As we raise the $13.6 million in private funds it will take to expand Doernbecher's cancer unit, it's gratifying to know that some of that support is coming directly from kids in the community."

Today Kids Making Miracles is one of the fastest-growing grassroots volunteer organizations in the Pacific Northwest. Since the program began in 1992, participating students have raised more than $2 million for Doernbecher. This year's program sponsors include Wells Fargo, the Portland Trail Blazers, Northwest Ford Stores, Papa John's Pizza and ClubSport Oregon.

With nationally recognized programs in pediatric heart surgery, neurosurgery and cancer, Doernbecher Children's Hospital provides primary and specialized care to nearly 40,000 patients each year from Oregon, southwest Washington and beyond. As part of Oregon Health & Science University, the state's only health and research university, Doernbecher combines healing, teaching, discovery and outreach in its mission to improve the health of all children.

Doernbecher's Kenneth W. Ford Northwest Children's Cancer Center Expansion Project - Fact Sheet
WHY THE NEED:

• Physician and scientists at Doernbecher Children's Hospital care for more than 80 percent of the children who are battling cancer in Oregon. During the last four years, clinic visits rose from 2,500 annually to more than 9,000, the average daily census in the inpatient unit has increased from nine to 20, and this year 200 new children with cancer will be referred to Doernbecher.
     
• An expansion would allow the staff to provide care to 30 to 40 percent more children who need surgery, 70 percent more who need chemotherapy infusion treatment and 40 percent more visits to the clinic.
     
• Doernbecher houses the region's first and only Comprehensive Pediatric Brain Tumor Program. The program combines the talents of a neurosurgeon, neuro-oncologist , nurse practitioner, radiation oncologist, physical therapist and psychologist all on one team in one clinic visit.
     
• Doernbecher is the only hospital in Oregon that performs pediatric stem cell and bone marrow transplants. Stem cell transplants are expected to rise from 22 to 40 this year.
     
• Doernbecher recently became one of only 21 Phase I Institutions in the United States funded by the National Cancer Institute to test new pediatric cancer treatments. It was the first hospital in the world to study pediatric applications of Gleevec, a new leukemia-fighting pill developed at OHSU.
     
• WHAT THE EXPANSION WILL BE:
     
• Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2003 on a new 22-bed inpatient unit, 12 outpatient infusion beds, an expansion of the eight- examination room outpatient clinic and a new school room. The current 16-bed inpatient cancer unit will provide additional beds when needed, for a total of 38 available beds.
     
• The Doernbecher Foundation hopes to raise $13.6 million through community support to help fund the first phase of the cancer center expansion, along with an addition of pediatric intensive care rooms.
