OHSU Announces Several Appointments

   Portland, Ore.

M. Susan Smith, Ph.D., director of the Oregon National Primate Research Center, has been appointed to a three-year term on the presidential committee that evaluates nominees for the National Medal of Science. Since its establishment in 1959 the National Medal of Science has been awarded to 362 distinguished scientists in the fields of behavioral/social sciences, biological sciences, chemistry, engineering, mathematics/computer science and physical sciences.

Smith has been director of the primate center since 1994. Her research, which concerns the neuronal pathways that may play a role in regulating the control of hunger and satiety, is intended to produce insights into the causes of obesity as well as potential treatments.

Thomas Flora, Ed.D., has been named associate dean for finance in the OHSU School of Medicine. He will help support the growth of the academic, research and teaching programs within the school. He will also provide leadership in addressing the financial challenges facing both the medical school and the university as a whole.

Flora was previously a manager at Stockamp & Associates Inc., a health care consulting firm for large hospitals and health systems. He has also held the position of director of decision support and senior associate in planning at Legacy Health System. He has a doctorate in community health and program development from Oregon State University.

Scott Page has been named director of OHSU's Logistics Department, which is responsible for a wide variety of basic services at OHSU, including mail delivery, patient transportation, purchasing and contracting. With approximately 220 employees, the department has made significant strides in recent years thanks in part to initiatives that Page has spearheaded.

Page began his career with OHSU in 1989, and he has held positions of increasing responsibility in various areas at OHSU. He joined the Logistics Department in 1995, rising to become its associate director before assuming the position of interim director earlier this year. He recently completed his master's degree in business administration at Portland State University with a specialization in logistics and supply chain management.
