OHSU wins Consumer Choice Award along with 175 other top hospitals in the nation.
Your friends, neighbors and family think Oregon Health & Science University is the best hospital in Portland, according to a survey by the National Research Corporation (NRC). OHSU was selected by residents of the Portland metro area as its sole Consumer Choice Award winner. This is the first time since the NRC began this public opinion survey in 1996 that OHSU has been selected as the sole Consumer Choice Award winner in Portland. OHSU has shared the award for the last four years. This year OHSU also shares the Salem Consumer Choice Award with Salem Hospital. The award will be announced in the next issue of Modern Healthcare magazine.
"OHSU's mission is healing, teaching, discovery and community service. This award is a tribute to the excellent work done by our nurses, physicians and other clinical staff whose focus is healing," said Jenny James, M.S., R.N., chief nursing executive for OHSU Hospitals and Clinics and associate dean for clinical affairs in the OHSU School of Nursing. "It is also a great acknowledgment of the support staff - environmental, clerical and other nonclinicians - who are essential members of the OHSU team."
Each year the NRC surveys consumers to determine their hospitals of choice in their markets. The NRC awarded Portland's Consumer Choice Award to OHSU for receiving the city residents' highest ratings for best image/reputation (23.1%), doctors (27%), nurses (15.5%) and overall quality (19.7%). OHSU also shared Salem's Consumer Choice Award with Salem Hospital. Salem residents selected OHSU for having the best image/reputation, doctors and overall quality. Oregonians also ranked OHSU first in the four categories that best reflect high-quality patient care: best image/reputation, best doctors, best nurses and best overall quality.
The NRC Healthcare Market Guide(R) survey was sent to 1,019 households in Portland, 440 in Salem and 2,160 throughout the state of Oregon from March to June of this year. This survey is the nation's largest and most comprehensive of its kind. Nationally, more than 140,000 households responded with their choices for best hospitals.
The NRC asked for more detailed preferences from Portland residents. They selected OHSU as the best in the following areas:
- Cancer treatment
- Heart care
- Pediatric services
- Neurology services
- Latest technology and equipment
- Widest range of services
- Best community health programs
- Best at providing care for those unable to pay
OHSU was selected as the best hospital out of 17 hospitals serving the Portland-metro area, 12 serving Salem and 23 serving the state of Oregon.
