U.S. News & World Report ranks primary care second in the nation; family medicine is third
According to just-released U.S. News & World Report's "Best Graduate Schools 2005," the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine again ranks No. 2 among 125 American medical schools for its primary care education program. This is the ninth consecutive year the medical school has ranked in the top 2 percent nationally, and the fourth year in a row that it has maintained the No. 2 ranking.
The magazine ranks medical and nursing school specialties by reputation. As a provider of family medicine education, the School of Medicine ranks No. 3 for the third consecutive year. The school's Department of Family Medicine has ranked in the top 3 percent for the past nine years.
U.S. News & World Report ranks nursing school education programs once every three years -- the most current rankings are from last year's report. The Oregon Health & Science University School of Nursing master's program ranks sixth, placing it in the top 2 percent of approximately 350 such programs in the United States. The school's program has earned top rankings each year since the news magazine first began its surveys 14 years ago.
The School of Nursing's nurse-midwifery program ranks first, tying with the University of Pennsylvania.
All seven of the nursing school's master's specialties score in the top 10. In the category of nurse practitioner gerontological/geriatric, the school ties for third place. In the categories of nurse practitioner adult and nurse practitioner family, the school ranks fourth and fifth respectively. In the category of nurse practitioner pediatrics, the school ranks sixth. In the category of clinical nurse specialist psychiatric/mental health the school ranks ninth. For both the clinical nurse specialist adult/medical-surgical and clinical nurse specialist community public health categories, the school ranks 10th.
OHSU OGI School of Science & Engineering ties for 40th in environmental/environmental health engineering. It is the only Pacific Northwest engineering school to rank in this category.
U.S. News & World Report does not rank dental schools; however, the OHSU School of Dentistry consistently ranks in the top fifth of U.S. dental schools for performance on both parts of the National Dental Board Examinations. The 2004 graduating dental class ranked 11th nationwide on Part l and sixth on Part II of these written examinations.
Other rankings reissued from last year's report include: the Master's of Public Health Program, a collaborative statewide degree program offered through OHSU, Oregon State University and Portland State University, ties for second place; the Physician Assistant Program ties for 10th place.
