The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the OHSU OGI School of Science & Engineering announces the following new appointment and award:
Nirupama Bulusu, Ph.D., joins the School of Science & Engineering as an assistant professor of computer science and engineering (http://cse.ogi.edu). She is exploring fundamental network services and applications for Embedded Networked Sensing (ENS) systems, often referred to as wireless sensor networks. Before joining the School of Science & Engineering, Bulusu conducted research at the National ICT Australia, Limited. She received a B.Tech (bachelor's degree) in computer science and engineering from The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, in 1997, and a doctorate in computer science from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2002. She is a member of ACM (Association for Computing Machinery), IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.), Sigma Xi Research Honor Society, and Women in Engineering.
Kristina Hollingshead, a doctoral student in the OGI School's Center for Spoken Language Understanding (http://www.cslu.ogi.edu), has won a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. Hollingshead was one of 111 students selected nationally to receive a fellowship in Computer and Information Science (1,020 students received fellowships overall in five categories). For 2004 she will receive a $30,000 stipend and $10,500 cost-of-education allowance, which is renewable for three years within a five-year period. Hollingshead is researching ways of using speech recognition to automate the diagnosis of stuttering children under the tutelage of OGI School of Science & Engineering assistant professor Peter Heeman, Ph.D. She received her bachelor's in English and computer science at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
