OHSU President to Receive Case's CEO Award

   Portland, Ore.

Oregon Health & Science University President Peter Kohler, M.D., is being honored by a national education advocacy organization for his efforts to promote and support the institution.

Kohler is one of nine educational leaders set to receive the Chief Executive Leadership Award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, or CASE. The award, announced Monday, honors presidents and heads of independent schools for exceptional efforts to boost their campuses’ images and support their institutions.

“While I am quite honored to receive this award, I know it is the result of the effective work of a talented team of people here,” Kohler said. “To me, this validates the message we are creating about the value of OHSU.”

Created in 1999, the CEO Awards recognize leaders for advancing their campuses by establishing positive images of the institutions, increasing their institutions’ stature within the community, cultivating private support, and encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship among employees, especially those in advancement professions.

Kohler, who has headed OHSU since 1988, is the award recipient representing District VIII, which encompasses the Pacific Northwest and western Canada. In its announcement, CASE noted Kohler’s leadership in state health policy and health issues, and his advocacy for under-served populations. His oversight of the university’s 1995 conversion from a highly regulated state agency to a public corporation with more autonomy and its own board of directors also was cited.

In addition, CASE noted Kohler’s leadership in OHSU’s 2001 merger with Oregon Graduate Institute that added biotechnology and computing to its health care mission. And during Kohler’s 16-year tenure, the institution’s endowment increased 650 percent, with total gifts and pledges amounting to nearly $500 million.

The CEO Awards are presented during CASE’s annual assembly, attended by members in alumni relations, communications and marketing, and development for colleges, universities and independent schools. This year’s meeting is July 11 in San Diego. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, CASE is the largest international association of education institutions, serving more than 3,200 universities, colleges, schools and related organizations in the United States, Canada, Mexico and 42 other countries.
