OHSU Surgeon Named Editor-in-Chief of International Journal

   Portland, Ore.

John Hunter, M.D., Mackenzie Professor and chairman of surgery in the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine, has been named editor-in chief of the prestigious World Journal of Surgery. The term of this position is indefinite, but usually runs a 10- to 15-year course.

The World Journal of Surgery is the official journal of the International Society of Surgery and publishes original articles on the science and art of surgery, including clinical surgery, experimental surgery and related sciences, surgical education and the socioeconomics of surgical care.

"The World Journal of Surgery is in a unique position as the only surgical journal with a title and a mission to share the latest information on surgical science," said Hunter.

Hunter, who also co-directs the OHSU Digestive Health Center, is an internationally recognized expert in minimally invasive surgery. During the early '90s, he helped pioneer laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery and trained hundreds of surgeons to insert tiny cameras and instruments through a dime-sized incision to see and operate inside the body. This type of "bloodless surgery" allows patients to recuperate faster with fewer postoperative complications.

Hunter's research and clinical interests include treatment for Barrett's esophagus, a disorder caused by gastric esophageal reflux disease, and advances in minimally invasive surgery -- he has published widely on both topics.

Among his achievements since becoming chairman of surgery in 2001 is the creation of the first rural surgery residency program in the nation. Hunter created the program to help young surgeons get hands-on experience and to provide rural hospitals with much-needed help. Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass, Ore., is the first hospital to participate in the program.

Hunter is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of more than two dozen professional societies and organizations, including: the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), serving as president in 1998; the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT); and the American Surgical Association (ASA). He has been named one of the Best Doctors in America since 1995.

He earned his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania and did his residency at the University of Utah. He completed a research fellowship in lasers and endoscopic surgery at the University of Utah; a clinical fellowship in surgery (endoscopy) at Massachusetts General Hospital; and a clinical fellowship in surgery (pancreaticobiliary endoscopy) at the University of Western Ontario, Canada.

"The Internet has allowed access globally to information, including the World Journal of Surgery. It is the job of the World Journal of Surgery editors to provide up-to-date relevant information to improve the quality of surgical care and patient care around the world," Hunter said.
