OGI School of Science & Engineering Announces New Appointment and Award

   Portland, Ore.

Oregon Health & Science University's OGI School of Science & Engineering announces the following new appointment and award:

Patricia Toccalino, Ph.D., recently was nominated to and approved for the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality's new Air Toxics Science Advisory Committee. The seven-person committee will provide scientific and technical advice for the development of Oregon's Air Toxics program, which was adopted by the Environmental Quality Commission in October 2003. The program will target urban area toxic emissions from mobile and various small pollution sources to complement the industrial focus of the federal program that DEQ has implemented since 1990. The state program will take a community-based approach by creating a framework for adopting concentration limits for certain pollutants, identifying high-risk areas of the state, and implementing local emission reduction plans. Toccalino is an assistant professor of environmental and biomolecular systems at the OGI School of Science & Engineering. She received her bachelor's in environmental health/toxic substance control in 1987 from Oakland University in Rochester, Mich., and her doctorate in environmental science and engineering from the Oregon Graduate Institute of Science & Technology (now the OGI School of Science & Engineering) in 1992. Toccalino's research interests lie at the interfaces between environmental chemistry, risk assessment, toxicology, and the fate and transport of contaminants in the environment.

Jeffrey Schilling, Educational Communications multimedia producer, recently received a Silver Reel award from the Media Communications Association International's 36th annual Media Festival. Schilling wrote and produced the video "Forty" to celebrate the OGI School of Science & Engineering's 40th anniversary. The video offers a glimpse of the school's past and shows how it is benefiting the community today. "Forty" debuted at OGI's annual fund-raiser, "Picnic in the Park," and headlined several other OHSU events throughout the anniversary year.
