Hearing experts discuss latest research breakthroughs; vendors demonstrate new devices
Nearly 30 million Americans are hearing impaired, and odds are you, or someone close to you, will experience a hearing loss during your lifetime. To help hearing impaired patients live life to the fullest, scientists in the Oregon Health & Science University Oregon Hearing Research Center and the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery in the OHSU School of Medicine are hosting "Hearing Today and Tomorrow: A Hearing Health and Resource Fair" to familiarize hearing impaired individuals and their families with the myriad research advances, products and services now available.

Marquam Hill Campus, 3181 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road, PortlandHearing loss is a medical disorder and, for a limited number of patients, can be surgically corrected. However, for the vast majority of patients who cannot be helped with surgery, medical devices and rehabilitation can substantially reduce hearing loss. "Hearing Today and Tomorrow" features nationally recognized hearing researchers and clinicians who will discuss hearing aids vs. cochlear implants; the latest hearing research; how to evaluate children with hearing loss; how to live with hearing loss; and implantable hearing aids, plus more.
Assistive listening devices, real-time captioning and sign language interpretation will be provided.
Hearing aid and cochlear implant manufacturers, as well as self-help and service organizations for hard-of-hearing individuals, will be on hand to demonstrate their products, and provide information and assistance. The fair is free and door prizes will be given. A serve-yourself sandwich bar will be available during the 12:30 p.m. lunch break for $5.
