It's not too early to think about holiday cards ... and it's the perfect time to support a worthwhile project that helps the young patients of Doernbecher Children's Hospital. The Cards for Kids program - operated by Friends of Doernbecher volunteers - is under way for 2004, which means these unique holiday cards are available in participating area stores.
Eight greeting cards were designed by Doernbecher patients, their siblings and local professional artists. The program is supported by 12 sponsors and more than 20 in-kind donors, with 100 percent of the sales benefiting Doernbecher Children's Hospital. Last year the Cards for Kids program raised nearly $85,000, and the popular holiday fundraiser has contributed more than $1 million to the hospital since the program's inception 13 years ago.
Cards are available in the Portland area now through December at the following area retailers: Annie's Hallmark, Chocolates by Bernard Callebaut, Coco & Toulouse Go Shopping, Doernbecher Children's Hospital Gift Shop, Heart of the Mountain, Made in Oregon stores, Nanny B's, New Seasons Markets, Nordstrom stores, Our Children's Store, Peggy Sunday's, Powell's City of Books, Shafer Vineyard Cellars, Sleighbells Christmas Shop and Tree Farm, and Zupan's.
Proceeds from this year's program will go to three important programs supported by Friends of Doernbecher: the Kenneth W. Ford Northwest Children's Cancer Center expansion, the Friends of Doernbecher grant program, and the Family Resource Library in the lobby of Doernbecher Children's Hospital.
Art entries are encouraged and accepted throughout the year. For more information about Cards for Kids, submitting artwork, or becoming involved with Friends of Doernbecher, call 503 220-8341 or 800 800-9583.
