OHSU Seeks High School Juniors For Hands-On Cancer Research Experience

02/03/05   Portland, Ore.

Current Oregon high school juniors who are socially and economically disadvantaged and who are interested in health careers are encouraged to apply to the CURE Project, a summer program of research mentorship training at Oregon Health & Science University. The project, which begins June 27, is sponsored by the OHSU Cancer Institute and the OHSU Center for Diversity and Multicultural Affairs.

Students will work in research laboratories under the guidance of OHSU scientists conducting cancer research for a minimum of eight weeks. They will be expected to create a formal presentation on their research. In addition to participating in daily activities in a laboratory, students will attend weekly seminars on college preparation as well as a range of scientific and ethical issues in various areas of biomedical research.

Economically disadvantaged students are defined using the U.S. Department of Health and Human services guidelines. Socially disadvantaged students are those who come from an environment that may inhibit them from obtaining knowledge, skills or abilities required to enroll in and successfully complete an undergraduate program that could lead to a career in health sciences. The category includes but is not restricted to students whose parents did not attend or did not complete college, or students who are being raised by a divorced or single parent. Underrepresented minorities students belong to ethnic groups that are recognized as being underrepresented in health and science careers, including African American, Native American, Alaskan Native, Pacific Islander and Mexican American students.

Students who are accepted will be paid minimum wage and will receive bus passes for the duration of the summer project. Those interested must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Applications are due by Friday, Feb. 18, and are available online at www.ohsu.edu/academic/diversity or call the OHSU Center for Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at 503 494-5657 for an application.
