WORLD-RENOWNED EXPERT IN LUNG DISEASE HONORED
A. Sonia Buist, M.D., professor of medicine (pulmonary and critical care medicine), OHSU School of Medicine, has received the 2005 Alberto Salazar Asthma in Action Award from the American Lung Association of Oregon. Buist was honored for her exceptional education, awareness and research in the areas of asthma and pulmonary disease. The award is named for Salazar who set a world record in marathon running while battling asthma.

ASSISTANT DEAN REPRESENTS U.S. AT BRITISH MEDICAL CONFERENCE
Richard Allen, M.D., assistant dean for graduate medical education, OHSU School of Medicine, represented the United States at the British Medical Association's conference, "The Global Health Professional: Improving Health, Fighting Poverty," in London. At the conference, Allen explained the United States' intentions to increase its supply of physicians for the first time in decades by increasing the number of medical schools and expanding enrollment at existing U.S. medical schools.

DIRECTOR OF GERIATRIC PSYCHIATRY DIVISION APPOINTED
Linda Ganzini, M.D., M.P.H., professor of psychiatry, has been appointed head of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry. OHSU School of Medicine. Ganzini is internationally known for her work in medical ethics. She also is a professor of psychiatry and director of the Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Program, OHSU School of Medicine; and senior scholar for the Center for Ethics in Health Care at OHSU. She is the director of the Interprofessional Fellowship Program in Palliative Care, and a staff psychiatrist for the Consult-Liaison Psychiatry Service and Outpatient Mental Health at the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED SLEEP RESEARCHER RECOGNIZED
Robert Sack, M.D., professor of psychiatry, OHSU School of Medicine, and medical director, OHSU Sleep Disorders Clinic, has received the 2005 Distinguished Alumni Scientist Award from the OHSU School of Medicine Alumni Association. Sack was honored for continued research excellence, service to the scientific community and contributions to basic science education. He is internationally renowned for his work in the relationships among circadian rhythms, light, melatonin and sleep.

OHSU CHILDREN'S PSYCHIATRY PROGRAM HONORED
The OHSU Children's Psychiatric Day Treatment Center has been awarded a neighborhood arts project grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council. The funds will be used to create a multi-sensory therapeutic mural titled "Sharing, Learning, Healing," which will be on permanent display at the center. Local artist Ping Khaw will work with children who attend the center to create and install the mural. The mural is part of the planned overall transformation of the former office building to a therapeutic children's space.
