Education

The Danone Institute for Nutrition & Health has awarded David J.P. Barker, M.D., Ph.D., professor at the University of Southampton, United Kingdom and Oregon Health & Science University, United States, with the 5th edition of the Danone International Prize for Nutrition. He was honored for his pioneering role in the area of diet, nutrition and chronic adult disease. The official announcement was made today, Sept. 20, at the 18th International Congress of Nutrition in Durban, South Africa.

The Danone International Prize for Nutrition recognizes researchers or research teams who have developed novel concepts in nutrition and contributed to advancing the frontiers of human nutrition.

Barker is partnering with the OHSU Heart Research Center, directed by Kent L. Thornburg, Ph.D., professor of medicine at OHSU, on his award-winning research program, which looks at the fetal origins of chronic disease in adults. Barker and Thornburg are working together in partnership with Southampton University to develop a clinical research project, called the Oregon Woman's Study, which will study Oregon mothers and babies and their nutritional needs.

The Danone International Prize for Nutrition, created in 1997 with the scientific support of the Fondation Recherche Medicale in Paris, France, is a cornerstone program of Danone Institute International, a non-profit association that promotes the exchange of information related to the relationship between diet, nutrition and health.
