Nationally Prominent Bariatric Surgeon Joins OHSU Faculty
Bruce M. Wolfe, M.D., has been appointed to the Department of Surgery in the OHSU School of Medicine, OHSU Digestive Health Center. Wolfe is a nationally prominent bariatric surgeon who brings 25 years' experience in the surgical treatment and scientific study of obesity, surgical nutrition and metabolism. He is principal investigator of National Institutes of Health-funded grants, including a five-year $1.8 million award to study the outcomes and safety of bariatric surgery. OHSU is 1 of just six 6 centers nationwide to participate in this landmark consortium, known as LABS. Wolfe is co-chairman of this consortium. Wolfe comes to OHSU from the University of California at Davis, where he served as professor of surgery in the School of Medicine and, from 1986 to 2003, as chief of gastrointestinal surgery.
OHSU Surgeon Receives College Of Surgeon's Highest Honor
Donald Trunkey, M.D., professor and past chairman of surgery, OHSU School of Medicine, has received the highest honor awarded bestowed by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) - the 2005 Distinguished Service Award. The award recognizes Trunkey's dedicated service as a fellow of the college, his service on college committees, his unselfish dedication to the surgical profession, and his distinctive service to the surgical community through membership and participation in numerous surgical and trauma societies on the local, state and regional level. Trunkey also was commended for service to his patients, community, state and country throughout his surgical career.
Associate Dean For Clinical Affairs Appointed
Neil Swanson, M.D., has been appointed associate dean for clinical affairs in the OHSU School of Medicine. In his new role, Swanson will facilitate alignment of the vision, mission and goals of the OHSU Medical Group and the School of Medicine. Swanson also is professor and chairman of dermatology, professor of otolaryngology/head and neck surgery, OHSU School of Medicine; and president, OHSU Medical Group. He has served as vice president of the American Academy of Dermatology, is past-president of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, and former board member of the American College of Mohs Micrographic surgery and Oncology.
OHSU Pyschiatrist Receives National Award For Outstanding Research
Linda Ganzini, M.D., M.P.H., professor of psychiatry and head of geriatric psychiatry in the OHSU School of Medicine, has received the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine's 2005 Research Award. This annual award is presented to one outstanding researcher in the field of psychosomatic medicine. Ganzini also is director of the school's Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Program; and senior scholar for the OHSU Center for Ethics in Health Care. She is the director of the Interprofessional Fellowship Program in Palliative Care, and a staff psychiatrist for the Consult-Liaison Psychiatry Service and Outpatient Mental Health at the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
