OHSU Family Medicine At Scappoose Expands, Plans Move

Responding to its growing patient population, Oregon Health & Science University Family Medicine at Scappoose will move to a larger facility, add two health care providers and expand its hours of operation.

The clinic is expected to move by April 15 to Crossroads Plaza, Building 1, 51377 Old Portland Road, Scappoose.

The primary care practice currently is recruiting for an additional full-time physician, and a physician assistant or nurse practitioner. With new clinicians, the Scappoose office will have a total of three physicians and three other health care providers. The clinic also will be open four nights a week.  The new hours will be Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The clinic has grown from serving 600 patients monthly in December 2004 to almost 1,100 patients a month in December 2005. After receiving a federal designation as a Rural Health Clinic almost two years ago, OHSU Family Medicine at Scappoose has enhanced its mission to serve a broad patient base by accepting new patients with Medicaid, Medicare and commercial insurance.

The clinicians provide health care for the entire family, including maternity care and a full range of adult and child health care services. The practice has also added a clinical social worker who provides behavioral health counseling and it offers several patient education classes on such topics as childbirth education, diabetes management, pain, depression management, as well as a new class geared to overall good health and well-being.

"By increasing our size, we will be better able to meet the health care needs of southern Columbia County. This growth will allow us to increase the number of people we care for, and to expand the scope of services we provide.  Additionally, we will now be able to dedicate more resources to patient education programs.  This will clearly improve the health care services available and improve the health of those who call southern Columbia County home," said Scappoose Medical Director, Bruin Rugge, M.D., M.P.H., assistant professor of family medicine, OHSU School of Medicine.
