OHSU Trauma Nurse Earns Nurse Of The Year Award

Amanda Green, R.N., B.S.N., C.C.R.N. has been named Nurse of the Year by the 2006 Greater Portland Chapter of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACCN).

Green is a staff nurse in the trauma-neurosurgical intensive care unit at Oregon Health & Science University Hospital.

According to the association: "Green exemplifies excellence in nursing and embodies AACN's current theme of  'engage and transform'. To promote critical care nursing education, Green has eagerly taken on challenges that many would have refused. She is a born organizer, a talent that she shares with the critical care nursing population by organizing multiple educational events. She participates in the organization of events for the unit, hospital and community. Yearly she participates in the development and production of the OHSU trauma neurosurgical intensive care unit education day. As the Greater Portland Chapter education coordinator, she arranges multiple educational events for the group and participates in the organization of the yearly symposium.  Her enthusiasm and positive attitude are infectious as she encourages nursing staff to get involved and participate in educational offerings to renew their excitement about nursing.

"Within her unit at OHSU, Green demonstrates her leadership as charge nurse, preceptor and previous chairwoman  for the Unit-Based Nurse Practice Council. Green is always willing to take time to teach new staff members about the care of the critically ill trauma/neurosurgical patient population.

"Green's excellence also carries to the bedside.  She is caring and always willing to go the extra mile for her patients. Her patients and their families appreciate the outstanding care and compassion she provides. Her amazing ability to somehow make a horrible situation bearable is truly astounding.

Her co-worker, Katie Oyama, B.S.N., R.N., C.C.R.N.,  who nominated her, said: "If I were ever in the situation to require nursing care, I would want Amanda to be my provider, and that is the highest compliment I can give her." Oyama was recently named president of the AACCN Portland chapter.
