OHSU School of Dentistry New Appointments and Awards

   Portland, Ore.


The Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry announces the following new appointments and awards:

-- W. Bernie Carter, D.D.S., chairman of the Department of Periodontology, recently was inducted as a fellow of the International College of Dentists. Carter received a membership plaque, a gold lapel pin and a gold key.

-- Jack Clinton, D.M.D., dean, School of Dentistry, was awarded a fellowship in the American College of Dentists. The American College of Dentists is the oldest national honorary organization for dentists and membership is by invitation only. About 3.5 percent of dentists in the United States are selected as American College of Dentists fellows.

-- Prashant Gagneja, D.D.S., M.S., chairman of pediatric dentistry, recently became a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD) after passing the ABPD's certification examination. There are just 17 diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry in Oregon.

-- Carolyn Harakal, D.D.S., recently joined the dental school as an adjunct assistant professor of prosthodontics. Harakal received her doctorate in dental surgery at Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in 2002. She completed her general practice residency at the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center (PVMC) a year later and, while a volunteer professor in preclinical removable prosthodontics at OHSU, completed her advanced prosthodontic residency at PVMC.

-- Sarah Heward, D.M.D., recently joined the dental school as an adjunct assistant professor of prosthodontics/operative dentistry. Heward received her doctor of dental medicine degree from OHSU in 2000. After graduation, Heward was an associate dentist at the Parker Dental Center in Parker, Colo., and was a clinical instructor for the University of Colorado School of Dentistry. In 2005 Heward began postgraduate studies at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in head and neck anatomy, microbiology and immunology. Most recently, Heward was an associate dentist in North Grafton, Mass.

-- Erinne Lubisich, D.M.D., recently joined the school as an adjunct assistant professor of prosthodontics/operative dentistry. Lubisich graduated from OHSU School of Dentistry in 2004, earning the International College of Dentists Outstanding Achievement Award. After graduation, Lubisich completed a general practice residency at the Loma Linda Veterans Administration Medical Center, where she also was a clinical instructor and practiced general dentistry in a group practice, Hospitality Dental Associates.

-- Aaron Tinkle, D.M.D., recently joined the dental school as an adjunct assistant professor of prosthodontics/operative dentistry. Tinkle graduated from the OHSU School of Dentistry in 2006. As a senior, Tinkle was one of 12 students selected as a preclinical endodontics lab teacher's assistant. He was a member and president of Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity.

-- Jim Tinkle, D.M.D., associate professor emeritus of endodontology, recently was installed as Supreme Grand Master (president) of Delta Sigma Delta, a national dental fraternity. This is the top elected position for the fraternity in the United States. Tinkle will serve a one-year term, during which time the Oregon chapter of Delta Sigma Delta will celebrate its centennial.
