OHSU'S Primate Center Receives Another Clean Bill Of Health From USDA

The Oregon National Primate Research Center at Oregon Health & Science University has received another clean bill of health from the United States Department of Agriculture.

The Oregon National Primate Research Center at Oregon Health & Science University has received another clean bill of health from the United States Department of Agriculture. Approximately twice a year, the USDA conducts unannounced inspections of OHSU's primate center to ensure that the facility is in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act.

The latest report, which follows an inspection of ONPRC facilities and records Feb. 14 and 15, explains that "No noncompliant items were identified." This is common language on all USDA reports when a facility is found to be in compliance. The primate center has a history of receiving reports that it is in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act.

"The report affirms the dedication and hard work of the primate center's animal care staff," explained Victor Lukas, D.V.M., head veterinarian at the primate center. "The public often hears about research at the primate center such as the search for new AIDS treatments, new therapies for preventing premature birth and treating children born prematurely; and discoveries to help combat diseases of the brain such as multiple sclerosis. It's also important to remind people that these discoveries involve animals that are well-cared for and that are treated humanely."

The ONPRC is a registered research institution, inspected regularly by the United States Department of Agriculture. It operates in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act and has an assurance of regulatory compliance on file with the National Institutes of Health. The ONPRC also participates in the voluntary accreditation program overseen by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC).
