OHSU Sports Medicine Honors Student Athletes

Community

The Oregon Health & Science University Sports Medicine program in the Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation has honored two local high school seniors for their achievements in academics and athletics.

Sara Wild of Grant High School in Portland and Joseph Cramer of Lake Oswego's Lakeridge High School, both 17, each received $2,000 scholarships this morning during OHSU Sports Medicine's first Outstanding Student Athlete Awards Breakfast at the OHSU Center for Health & Healing at South Waterfront in Portland.

Cramer excels in many sports, from soccer to water polo. He's captain of Lakeridge High School's varsity basketball and varsity lacrosse teams, and coaches youth basketball camps. He's also a member of the National Honor Society, ranks in the top 10 percent of his class with a 3.96 grade point average and is active in his church. He will attend the University of Washington and major in pre-health sciences.

Wild also is a well-rounded athlete. She's on Grant High School's varsity track team and is captain of its state-champion varsity soccer team. She maintains a 4.0 grade point average and is ranked first in her class of almost 400. She serves as student body president and a track and field state champion. She has organized a fund-raiser for children with leukemia and helped plan her school blood drive. She plans to attend Williams College and majoring in engineering.

Cramer and Wild were among a total of 26 finalists for the scholarship. Others included:

Each school chose one male and one female student athlete to become a scholarship finalist based on athletic participation, academics, team contribution, community involvement and extracurricular activities. Each finalist then submitted an application; a two-page essay; an official high school transcript; a letter of acceptance from an accredited two- or four-year college or university; a letter of recommendation from the high school coach nominating the applicant; and a letter of recommendation from a member of the community with whom the applicant has been involved in community activities.
"Whether they were chosen by a coach, counselor or teacher, these students were proudly nominated by their schools, and we found out why: Not only are these great students and athletes, but they're great people as well," said James Chesnutt, M.D., medical director of the OHSU Sports Medicine program who served as emcee for this morning's breakfast. "These students go beyond having character. They are our future and we are proud to honor them today."

The selection committee included members of the OHSU Sports Medicine program – Dennis Crawford, M.D., Ph.D.; Andrea Herzka, M.D.; Nels Carlson, M.D.; and Hans Carlson, M.D. – and Dan Christopherson of KOIN-TV News. During the breakfast, Christopherson also congratulated 20 Student Athletes of the Week chosen earlier this year.

The Student Athlete of the Week program was co-sponsored by KOIN and the OHSU Sports Medicine program.
