Amling will assume the position long held by nationally renowned urologic surgeon John Barry, M.D. Barry has led the OHSU Division of Urology and Renal Transplantation for 29 years, earning a sterling reputation for his expertise in kidney transplantation, surgical diseases of the kidney, erectile dysfunction, Peyronie's disease and reconstructive urology. Barry now will focus on patient care and his work as president of the American Urological Association.

“Dr. Amling changes the focus of the program from kidney transplantation to urologic cancer. He is a recognized national and international authority on cutting-edge treatments for prostate cancer, including robotic prostatectomy.”
Amling is an expert in advanced minimally invasive management of urologic diseases, including robotic surgery for prostate and bladder cancer, and prostate cancer and outcomes research. He is credited with developing innovative evaluation tools to enhance the education of surgical residents and has authored numerous scholarly articles that have improved methods for diagnosing and treating prostate cancer.
“Given Chris Amling’s expertise in prostate cancer, it will be natural for him to have an affiliation with the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute. His coming here will further establish our prostate cancer program as one of the best in the country,” said Brian Druker, M.D., director of the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute.
Amling previously served as professor and director of the Division of Urology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he held the Anton J. Beuschen endowed chair in urologic surgery and research. Prior to that, he served as chairman of the Department of Urology at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego.
Amling is an Oregon native. He was born in Coquille and graduated from the University of Oregon and OHSU School of Medicine. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Urology; fellow in the American College of Surgeons; member of the American Urologic Association; president-elect of the Society of University Urologists; and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Urology; reviewer for the Journal of the American Medical Association and the Journal of Urology and Cancer, as well as several other publications and honors.
Amling recently was selected as the 2009 recipient of the prestigious American Urological Association Gold Cystoscope award. This national award is given annually to one urologist in recognition of significant contributions to the specialty of urology within 13 years of completion of residency training.

The OHSU Knight Cancer Institute is the only National Cancer Institute-designated center between Sacramento and Seattle.
