Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine has recruited nationally recognized ear, nose and throat/head and neck surgery expert Paul Flint, M.D., to chair its department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery.
Prior to joining OHSU, Flint was the Charles W. Cummings Professor of otolaryngology/head and neck surgery, and professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
“Dr. Flint joins the School of Medicine at a very important time. I am confident that he brings the necessary expertise, experience and leadership qualities to not only enhance the department’s already excellent education, research and clinical programs but also to be an influential leader within the School of Medicine,” said Mark Richardson, M.D., M.B.A., dean, OHSU School of Medicine.
Flint’s long-term goals for the department are to build on its national reputation in clinical care, expand the scope of existing research programs, and strengthen collaboration between clinical and research faculty at both the departmental and institutional levels.
His strategies to achieve those goals include the expansion of OHSU’s Clinician-Scientist Program and coordinated growth with the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, the OHSU Oregon Hearing Research Center and the OHSU Vollum Institute.
Flint’s clinical interests include the development of procedures to improve voice and breathing, treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the airway, and movement disorders affecting the head and neck, including dystonia and Parkinson’s disease.
His research interests include neuroanatomic and physiologic changes occurring with laryngeal injury, prosthetics for laryngeal implantation, gene therapy to enhance nerve regeneration in the paralyzed larynx, and the application of micro-robotics for laryngeal surgery.
Flint is a founding member of the Society for Airway Management, a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, and the recipient of more than $5 million in research and grant support. His has published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles and is senior editor of the fifth edition of textbook Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
