Free Presentation on Jewish Genetic Disorders

Families, clinicians are invited to hear OHSU Doernbecher physician-researcher Robert Steiner, M.D., present the latest research, treatment options

WHAT:          A free community presentation on Jewish genetic disorders for families and health care professionals. Attendees will learn about Jewish history, founder effects, the basic biology of genetic diseases, and how to get screened for these disorders.

“You May Have Inherited More Than Just Your Blue Eyes: Facts About Jewish Genetic Disorders” is co-sponsored by Jewish Family & Child Service and Congregation Neveh Shalom, and supported by the Mittleman Jewish Community Center.

DETAILS:     Featured speakers:

·         Robert Steiner, M.D., professor of pediatrics, and molecular and medical genetics, and vice chairman for pediatric research, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, Oregon Health & Science University. Steiner will share his expertise in lysosomal storage diseases. He is a frequent national and international expert on these and other metabolic diseases.

·         Gary Frohlich, M.S., C.G.C., a certified genetics counselor with more than 35 years of experience, began his career in a neonatal intensive care unit, transitioned to prenatal genetics and now works with patients with treatable lysosomal storage diseases, particularly Gaucher disease the most common Ashkenazi Jewish genetic disorder.
