Local dealers and representatives from Hyundai Motor America presented a $100,000 "Hope Grant" to OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital in support of research dedicated to improving the lives of children with cancer. Pediatric cancer patients and their families joined OHSU Doernbecher administration and staff in receiving the award.

Hyundai's donation specifically supports the work of Charles Keller, MD, FAAP, Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics, a pediatric oncology researcher in the Papé Family Pediatric Research Institute, OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital; and a member of the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute.

Dr. Keller's research focuses on molecularly targeted therapies for the treatment of the childhood muscle cancer, rhabdomyosarcoma, and the childhood brain tumor, medulloblastoma.

"Our research team is grateful for this opportunity to further childhood cancer research on behalf of Hope on Wheels, Hyundai and their dedicated employees. The effect of Hope on Wheels can be tangibly seen across the nation, not only through the distinctive handprint cars, but through the innovative research that has been sponsored at so many academic hospitals and centers.  We are honored to have this chance to do our part," said Dr. Keller.

Childhood cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease among children in the United States ages 1 to 14. Every day, approximately 40 children, the size of an elementary school classroom, are diagnosed with cancer, which adds up to almost 15,000 new cases of childhood cancer diagnosed annually.
