Dr. FrancisThe New York Times has reported on new treatments for retina disease being developed by two companies. One of the companies, Advanced Cell Technology, said it would test its stem cell therapy on 12 adults with severe vision loss. OHSU will be a site for the trial. In the article, Peter Francis, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, was quoted as saying, “the eye is a good place to test stem cell therapy because it is accessible.” He also said, “There is less chance of rejection of the implanted cells because the eye is shielded somewhat from the body’s immune system.” The complete article is available at nytimes.com.  A similar article can be found at usatoday.com
