Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) today announced the hiring of Lawrence J. Furnstahl as OHSU’s new chief financial officer.
Furnstahl currently is chief financial and strategy officer for the University of Chicago Medical Center and Biological Sciences Division, and also serves as vice president for financial planning for science at the University of Chicago. Apart from two years at UCSF Stanford Healthcare (1997-1999), he has been at the University of Chicago since 1983.
In his most recent roles, Furnstahl has been responsible for articulating strategy for the University of Chicago Medical Center, ensuring that the university’s research and education missions are supported through optimal hospital performance, and developing financing plans for world-class science and medicine programs at the University of Chicago. He also manages the budgets for University of Chicago biology and medicine — a $1.6 billion enterprise.
“Lawrence brings a first-rate intellect and a keen interest in the evolution of academic health centers to OHSU,” said Joe Robertson, M.D., M.B.A., OHSU president. “His broad experience in planning financial strategy across research, educational and clinical enterprises will be a tremendous asset to us as we continue our work to refine OHSU’s business model.”

Furnstahl will start work at OHSU on Jan. 31, 2011. He replaces Pitt Calkin, who has served as Interim CFO since January 11, 2010.
