Former Health and Human Services Secretary Shalala to speak at OHSU

Former Clinton cabinet member Donna Shalala travels to Portland to discuss the ‘Future of Nursing’

WHAT:      Donna Shalala, Ph.D., current University of Miami president and former U.S. Secretary of Health Donna Shalalaand Human Services, will lead a panel discussion at Oregon Health & Science University about the future of nursing. The group will discuss a recent Institute of Medicine report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. Dr. Shalala will be joined on the panel by a number of Oregon health care leaders.

DETAILS:  The future of nursing panel discussion is the final in a series of presentations     commemorating the centennial of OHSU’s School of Nursing.

The panel will discuss the comprehensive Institute of Medicine report, which found that nurses’ roles, responsibilities and education must change significantly to meet the increased demand for health care that will be created by health care reform.

The health care leaders joining Dr. Shalala for the discussion will be: Thomas Aschenbrener, president of Northwest Health Foundation; Frances Biagioli, M.D., medical director, OHSU physician assistant program; Carol Bradley, M.S.N., R.N., C.E.N.P., senior vice president, Legacy Health System; Lani Doser, B.S.N., R.N., D.N.P., OHSU nursing student; Charlie Fautin, M.P.H., R.N., Benton County public health administrator and president of the Oregon Public Health Association; Jennifer Jacoby, M.S.N., R.N., N.E.A.-B.C., executive dean for hospital practice integration, OHSU; Charles Kilo, M.D., chief medical officer, OHSU University Hospital; Susan King, M.S., R.N., C.E.N., executive director, Oregon Nurses Association; Marilyn McGuire-Sessions, M.S.N., R.N., nursing program director, Portland Community College; David Robinson, Ph.D., interim provost, OHSU; and Christine Tanner, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N., OHSU professor and editor of the Journal of Nursing Education.
