"Som Saha's entire career has been devoted to issues related to race and ethnicity in health disparities, diversity within the health professions' workforce and social justice,” said Jim Reuler, MD, MACP, professor, Department of Medicine. “Not only is Dr. Saha a world-class investigator in these critically important areas,  but he has, also, taught and mentored trainees and colleagues about these topics, served as a consultant to governments and professional organizations and been a role model for professionalism and social responsibility. We are very privileged to have Som as a member of our OHSU community.”

The award is named in memory of the late Dr. Herbert W. Nickens, former Director of the Office of Minority Health, Department of Health and Human Services and the first Vice President and Director of the American Association of Medical Colleges’ (AAMC) Division of Community and Minority Programs. According to the SGIM website, “During his tenure at the AAMC, Dr. Nickens established groundbreaking programs designed to address the critical need for minority physicians and improvements in minority health status.”
