Oregon Health & Science University Hospital ranks No. 1 among Portland metro-area hospitals, according to U.S. News & World Report's first-ever Best Hospitals metro area rankings.

The new metro-are rankings recognize 622 hospitals in or near major cities with a record of high performance in key medical specialties, including 132 of the 152 hospitals already identified as the Best Hospitals.

OHSU Hospital is the only hospital in Oregon to be nationally ranked in U.S. News Best Hospitals and is recognized as “high-performing” in 10 medical specialties, including cancer, diabetes and enocrinology; ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology; geriatrics; gynecology; heart and heart surgery; kidney disorders; ophthalmology, orthopaedics, pulmonary; and urology.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the exceptional physicians, nurses and staff whose extraordinary commitment, teamwork and talent continue to make OHSU a world-class leader in health care,” said OHSU President Joe Robertson, M.D., M.B.A.

To be included in the new rankings, a hospital had to score in the top 25 percent among its peers in at least one adult medical specialty based on U.S. News Best Hospitals methodology and data. There are nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide.

Children’s hospitals were not included in the metro rankings because few metro areas have more than one or two, according to U.S. News. OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital is the only children’s hospital in Oregon to be nationally ranked by U.S. News.

Of all 18 hospitals in the Portland-metro area, which includes Hillsboro, Beaverton and Vancouver, Wash., seven were ranked:

1. Oregon Health & Science University Hospital
2. Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital and Health Center
3. Kaiser Permanente Sunnyside Medical Center
3. Legacy Emanuel Hospital and Health Center
3. Providence Portland Medical Center
6. Southwest Washington Medical Center
7. Providence St. Vincent Medical Center

U.S. News created Best Hospitals more than 20 years ago to identify hospitals exceptionally skilled in handling the most difficult cases, such as brain tumors typically considered inoperable and delicate pancreatic procedures.

The metro-area rankings will be updated in July at the same time the 2011-12 national Best Hospitals rankings are published online.
