The Oregon National Primate Research Center at Oregon Health & Science University has received another clean bill of health from the United States Department of Agriculture. Approximately twice a year, a USDA animal care expert conducts an unannounced, thorough inspection of OHSU’s primate center to ensure the facility is in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act.
The latest report, received last week, follows an inspection of ONPRC facilities and records on Aug. 16 and 17, 2011. The one-page report indicates: “No noncompliant items identified.” This language is common on USDA reports when a facility is found to have no items requiring correction. The primate center has a history of receiving reports that it is in full compliance with the Animal Welfare Act.
“Our large animal care staff of veterinarians, animal care technicians and behavioral health experts should all be congratulated for their continued dedication to the health and safety of these animals, which play a crucial role in developing the treatments of tomorrow," said Nancy Haigwood, Ph.D., director of the ONPRC.
