Dr. Brunett appointed new Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education

Dr. BrunettPatrick Brunett, MD, FACEP, has been appointed Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education. Dr. Brunett is an Associate Professor and Residency Program Director, Department of Emergency Medicine. The appointment is effective July 2011.

"We're here to do everything we can to make sure our residents succeed," said Donald Girard, MD, Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education and Continuing Medical Education. "Pat epitomizes this in his new role as Assistant Dean for GME."

As Assistant Dean for GME, Dr. Brunett will provide guidance and leadership in all program and policy issues relating to graduate medical education. He will chair the monthly meetings of the GME Committee and Executive Committee and actively participate in advancing the scholarship of the GME Research Work Group. He also will lead GME’s efforts to explore optimal clinical staffing models in collaboration with OHSU Hospital leadership. Dr. Brunett has served on the Graduate Medical Education Committee since 2003 and GME Executive Committee since 2006. He will continue to chair the School of Medicine Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, which he has done since 2008.  
 
“I am thrilled and honored by this extraordinary opportunity,” says Dr. Brunett. “I particularly look forward to working with GME leaders Don Girard and Sue Simmons, as well as the directors and trainees of the many outstanding residency and fellowship programs here at OHSU. We have a tradition of excellence to build upon as we take on future opportunities and challenges.”

Dr. Brunett received his undergraduate degree from UCLA and MD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and completed his Emergency Medicine training at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center. He has chaired the Council of EM Residency Directors (CORD) Academic Assembly Program Committee, and served on the Model of EM Clinical Practice Joint Committee, the ABEM Initial Certification Task Force Advisory Board, and the Ethics in Resident Recruitment Task Force. He has been recognized with the School of Medicine’s Faculty Mentor of the Year Award (2003) and Faculty Excellence in Education Award (2010), the CORD Impact Award (2011), and twice as his department’s Academic Instructor of the Year. He lives in Portland with his wife Carolyn, and their two cats Caesar and Tigger.  

“We want to thank Dr. Andrea Cedfeldt for her three years service as Assistant Dean,” said Dr. Girard.

Dr. Cedfeldt, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, is changing her role in the GME office to focus on resident and faculty development in clinical teaching. She will remain as an Education Consultant to the GME office.
