Dr. Gerard and Sue SimmonsThe OHSU Graduate Medical Education (GME) Program recently received a full five-year continued accreditation for the institution with no citations from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Further, the ACGME commended the institution “for its demonstrated substantial compliance,” effective institutional oversight and a well-prepared Institutional Review Document.

“Our GME programs continually receive high national rankings and are increasingly competitive – a direct result of the dedication of our program directors, leaders and staff. They bring great distinction to OHSU,” said Dean Mark Richardson. “In particular, I’d like to thank Dr. Don Girard for his leadership of Graduate Medical Education at OHSU.”

OHSU’s residency program in family medicine ranked second in the country by U.S. News & World Report this past year; OHSU’s primary care programs ranked third. Both programs, along with the Cascades East Family Medicine Residency Program in Klamath Falls, have ranked among the top 10 for more than a decade. In total, 250 new residents and fellows joined OHSU in July; the applicant pool consisted of over 11,300 medical school graduates.

“The fact that we emerged from the accreditation process, as rigorous as it is, with no citations is not only remarkable but a real reminder of how seriously we take graduate medical education,” said Donald Girard, MD, Associate Dean for Continuing Medical Education and Graduate Medical Education. “This commitment to excellence will no doubt continue and is a benefit to OHSU, our residents, and the Oregonians we serve.”
