WHAT:

Using learnings from his personal and scholarly journey, David Bangsberg, M.D., M.P.H., founding dean of the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health, will discuss how social determinants of health – or conditions where people live, work and learn – impact community health outcomes.

A graduate of Portland’s Lincoln High School, Bangsberg originally set his sights on a career in neuroscience; however, his experiences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, and subsequent medical training in both New York and San Francisco, turned his focus toward the advocacy and care of patients afflicted by urban poverty, violence and HIV. Since that time, he has become internationally known for his work on social, economic and structural barriers to HIV/AIDS care in the U.S. as well as in sub-Saharan Africa.

“Your zip code/your health: Understanding and overcoming the social determinants of health” is a part of the 2017- 2018 Marquam Hill Lecture Series.
