Oregon Health & Science University is one of 11 academic medical centers to be recognized for demonstrating excellence in delivering high-quality care based on the annual Vizient Quality and Accountability Ranking.

The 2019 Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award, presented Sept. 19 during the 2019 Vizient Connections Education Summit in Las Vegas, reflects work from July 2018 through June 2019.

“This award is a tribute to the thousands of faculty and staff whose exceptional work, dedication and compassion enable the state’s only academic health center to provide access to the highest quality health care for all Oregonians, including the underserved and uninsured,” said, John Hunter, M.D., FACS, executive vice president and chief executive officer, OHSU health system.

This year, 349 participating hospitals were segmented into four categories for the Vizient Quality and Accountability Ranking, which measured performance based on safety, mortality, clinical effectiveness, efficiency and patient centeredness. Additionally, to be ranked a top performer among comprehensive academic medical centers, OHSU was required to perform a minimum of:

The ranking’s composite scoring system uses patient-level performance data from a variety of sources including the Vizient Clinical Data Base, core measures data, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN).

The Vizient Quality and Accountability Ranking, conducted annually since 2005, helps participating hospitals and health systems understand their performance against their peers and identifies structures and processes associated with high performance in quality and safety across a broad spectrum of patient care activity.

“This award, with its unique, comprehensive and timely methodology, recognizes hospitals that achieve results on key measures that define patient care and delivery. Members receiving this award have demonstrated high level commitment to the continuous improvement that is necessary to succeed in today’s evolving health care industry,” said David Levine, group senior vice president, advanced analytics and product management for Vizient.
