The OHSU Marquam Hill Lecture Series features nationally recognized OHSU experts who present in lay terms the latest research findings and treatment options in their specialties. All lectures are free, but seating is limited and reservations are requested. Pre-register for each lecture.

Raising teenagers is always challenging but may feel even harder with new access to cannabinoid products. From the legalization of cannabis to vaping and the mysteries of CBD, what are the risks? Is some too much? Feldstein Ewing unpacks the neuroscience and the psychology of teen substance abuse and helps families define the line. Register to attend.

Nov. 21, 2019 – Love to See You Smile | Myriam Loyo Li, M.D., assistant professor of otolaryngology/head and neck surgery (facial plastic reconstructive surgery), OHSU School of Medicine

Our smile is a big part of who we are and how we’re perceived. When facial paralysis is caused by Bell’s palsy, stroke or other conditions, the impact can be profound. Feb. 20, 2020 – Reframing Addiction: Healing Amid an Opioid Epidemic | Honora Englander, M.D., associate professor of medicine (hospital medicine), OHSU School of Medicine; principal investigator and director of Project IMPACT (Improving Addiction Care Team).

Amid the devastation of the opioid epidemic is the opportunity to change our view of all addictions from shaming and blaming -- and exacerbating the problem -- to treating and healing. Englander reframes addiction as a chronic disease with known cures. Register to attend.

March 19, 2020 – What Happens When Kidneys Fail? | Susan Gurley, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of medicine (nephrology and hypertension), OHSU School of Medicine

Diabetes and high blood pressure are the common causes of kidney failure, which affects more than one in 10 Americans. Gurley will share her findings about the intersection of diabetes and high blood pressure, and how they lead to kidney disease,  and describe what happens — and what we can do — when kidneys fail.
