U.S. News & World Report: OHSU Doernbecher among the top children’s hospitals
Oregon Health & Science University Doernbecher Children’s Hospital is once again ranked one of the top children’s hospitals in the country in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Children’s Hospitals 2022-2023 — and is ranked the best in Oregon.
In the annual U.S. News guide, seven of OHSU Doernbecher’s services were ranked in the top 50 of nearly 200 hospitals surveyed:
- 30th in Cancer
- 37th in Diabetes and endocrinology
- 35th in Neonatology
- 20th in Nephrology
- 38th in Neurology and neurosurgery
- 49th in Pediatric pulmonology and lung surgery
- 43rd in Pediatric urology
Overall, OHSU Doernbecher ranks first in Oregon, and sixth in the Pacific region, which covers the West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii.

“We had an OHSU family,” says Kevin Vignery, whose wife Shabri was treated at Doernbecher for pregnancy complications. “We knew everyone; we became friends with them over the stay. If we had to be at a hospital, it was a good place to be. They weren’t all business. They tried to make it as enjoyable as it could be.”
OHSU Doernbecher is the only full-service children’s hospital in Oregon whose pediatric specialties meet U.S. News’ criteria for excellence in:
- Level and quality of hospital resources, including staffing, technology and special services.
- Delivery of care, such as reputation among pediatric specialists, programs that prevent infections and adherence to best practices.
- Clinical outcomes, including patient survival, infection rates and complications.
About the 2022-2023 Best Children's Hospitals rankings
The Best Children’s Hospitals rankings highlight U.S. News’ top 50 U.S. pediatric facilities in 10 specialty areas, based on an extensive analysis using a methodology that combines clinical and operational data, collected directly from a survey of 200 children’s hospitals, results from a reputational survey of board-certified pediatric specialists and supplemental information from resources such as the National Cancer Institute. Ninety hospitals nationwide ranked in at least one specialty. In 2021, U.S. News added a ranking of children’s hospitals in each state (and the District of Columbia), as well as seven multi-state regions. The Pacific Region includes children’s hospitals in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington. Now in their 16th year, the rankings include new measures for diversity, equity and inclusion.
U.S. News introduced the Best Children’s Hospitals rankings in 2007 to help families of sick children find the best medical care available. The rankings offer families an exclusive look at quality-related information at the individual hospital level. To calculate the Best Children’s Hospitals rankings, U.S. News gathered relevant data from children’s hospitals, pediatric specialists and other healthcare organizations in early 2022.
This year’s rankings will be published in the U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals 2022-2023" guidebook available October 5.
