Doernbecher Children's Hospital to unveil first pediatric intraoperative MRI facility on the West Coast

Cutting-edge technology allows neurosurgeons to complete complex brain surgeries more efficiently, safely

MEDIA ALERT

WHAT:

Media are invited to a special event to celebrate the completion of OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital’s intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging facility, and:

  • Get photos, video of OHSU Doernbecher faculty, staff, patients, families and donors as they see, for the first time, the only pediatric iMRI facility on the West Coast.
  • Hear OHSU President Joe Robertson, M.D., M.B.A.; and Kenneth Azarow, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.P., surgeon-in-chief, OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital; describe how this state-of-the-art technology will positively impact patients in Oregon, Southwest Washington and beyond.
  • Interview Nathan Selden, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.P., Campagna Professor and Chair, Department of Neurological Surgery, OHSU, and experience a virtual tour of the 10,000-square-foot OHSU Doernbecher iMRI facility.

WHEN:

Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, at 4 p.m.

Media should arrive in the OHSU Doernbecher first-floor lobby by 3:45 p.m.

**Editors: Due to the iMRI’s high-powered magnetic field, cameras will not be permitted within the facility. Photography and b-roll footage is available for download. (Password: ohsu)**

WHERE:

OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital
700 S.W. Campus Drive, Portland, OR 97239

DETAILS:

OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital will inaugurate the only mobile iMRI machine within a West Coast children's hospital. The 3-Tesla iMRI unit, housed in a new two-story, 10,000-square foot dedicated surgical and imaging facility, will provide real-time high-resolution images to the OHSU Doernbecher neurosurgical team during surgery, allowing them to operate more precisely and protect brain function more reliably. This technology will allow most tumors to be safely removed in a single operation, resulting in reduced emotional and physical toll on families, and improved outcomes for pediatric patients.

The OHSU Doernbecher iMRI is made possible through a generous gift from the family of Arnold and Leona Poletiek.
