Following a brief hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Doernbecher Freestyle program has returned. On February 25, 2022, seven inspirational – and highly creative – young patients from OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon, will virtually reveal their personally designed Nike sneaker, apparel and equipment collections.
Often adorned with intricate details, hidden messages and unexpected color palettes, these coveted designs represent the life experiences, medical journeys and relationships of the young patients who created them. Importantly, the collections also provide an opportunity for these special designers to give back to the hospital that helped save their lives.
Since 2004, Doernbecher Freestyle has engaged more than 100 patient-designers and hundreds of Nike employee volunteers from across NIKE, Inc. product creation to make each patient’s design dreams come true.
All collections have been auctioned and sold – with Nike donating 100% of the retail profits – to help raise more than $30 million for the children’s hospital. This one-of-a-kind collaboration between OHSU Doernbecher and Nike has helped to cover the cost of care for families in need, expand pioneering research that benefits kids around the world, and support specialized care unavailable anywhere else in the region.
