Dr. Burchiel is the first neurosurgeon in the U.S. to use deep brain stimulation to treat a patient with Parkinson’s disease. He has performed more than 1,000 deep brain stimulation surgeries for Parkinson’s since 1991. Five years ago, he pioneered a novel approach, performing the procedure while patients are asleep. He has conducted extensive research into the surgery and educates neurosurgeons all over the world on his work.
Burchiel has published more than 300 peer-reviewed articles and chapters, and his published textbooks include “Surgical Management of Pain.” In recognition of his leadership in the field, he received the 2015 Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.
