Gun violence is a preventable public health issue that is running rampant around the world. Unfortunately, it is often symbolic of underlying social inequity, racial inequality and hate.
OHSU and Portland State University invite individuals and families to a community forum, "Transforming pain into power: Equipping a community to address the impacts of gun violence." The event, which will take place on Saturday, April 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Highland Christian Center, aims to:
- Establish a safe venue that encourages community and institutional collaboration to reduce gun violence, address the social and economic conditions that contribute to it, and advance the mission of healing and hope.
- Affirm that gun violence is a preventable public health issue that can be changed through positive community engagement and academic research.
The event is free, and will include entertainment, knowledgeable keynote speakers, small group break-out sessions, as well as on-site resources to advance knowledge, advocacy and healing.
Lunch will be provided, and childcare and Spanish translation services are available upon request. Continuing education credits may be available for eligible participants.
