April 20: Forum to shine a light on sun safety, melanoma prevention

The OHSU-PSU School of Public Health presents “Skin Cancer: the silent killer of Central Oregon," the fourth in an ongoing series of Public Health Portland Style forums

Although it is known for its beautiful scenery and endless outdoor activities, Central Oregon also is home to the highest incidence of melanoma in the state. In fact, the rate of Melanoma-related deaths in Central Oregon far exceeds the national average.

“Skin Cancer: The silent killer of Central Oregon,” a Public Health Portland Style forum, will take place Thursday, April 20, at 5:30 p.m. at the Lucky Lab, 1945 N.W. Quimby Street in Portland. The event is free and people of all ages are welcome.

Hosted by the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health, the following speakers will explore the impacts of sun safety education and melanoma prevention:

  • Oliver J. Wisco, D.O., F.A.A.D., F.A.C.M.S., assistant professor of dermatology, OHSU School of Medicine
  • Tammy Wisco, program manager, Sun Hat Awareness Distribution & Education 
  • ShanRae Hawkins, melanoma survivor

The evening’s discussion will be moderated by Jackilen Shannon, Ph.D., R.D., M.P.H., associate professor, OHSU-PSU School of Public Health and co-director, OHSU Knight Cancer Institute Community Partnership Program.

Public Health Portland Style is a monthly series designed to open dialogue about key issues that affect residents of Oregon and Southwest Washington.

The presentations will feature timely topics about public health issues such as health care reform, homelessness, gun violence and skin cancer prevention.

The series takes place the third Thursday of each month. The event is free and open to the public; minors are invited to attend.
