After review, OHSU is opposed to the U.S. Senate’s Better Health Care Reconciliation Act and believes it offers no significant improvements over the bill passed in the House earlier this year. By any measure, the Senate’s proposal fails the test of maintaining access for the thousands of Oregonians and millions of Americans who gained access to care via individual markets and the expansion of Medicaid. 

As the state’s only academic health center, OHSU joins other institutions like it across the country deeply concerned that the legislation puts at risk the ability to provide care, as well as the resources to educate health professionals and conduct the research needed for new cures.

America’s health care system is complex, but it’s an issue that impacts every single person. The health of millions of Americans is worth the time to get it right. OHSU joins its colleagues in health care and education calling on the Senate to slow its consideration of the Better Health Care Reconciliation Act and to make meaningful changes that will improve the health and well-being of all Oregonians, not take us backward.
