Elias Wisdom, a third-year M.D./Ph.D. neuroscience graduate program student in the OHSU School of Medicine, earned the Alzheimer's Association’s “One to Watch” award at the 2026 Neuroscience Next conference in February.

This award recognizes the next generation of leaders in neuroscience — students, postdoctoral researchers and early career investigators — who are trailblazers in scientific thinking, collaboration, communication and outreach.

Wisdom is studying the molecular nature of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases under mentorship from Vivek Unni, M.D., Ph.D., and Andrew Emili, Ph.D. Wisdom’s research interests also include neurodegeneration, proteomics and aging. His clinical interests include neurology, dementia, movement disorders and geriatrics.

Carlee Curtin, a radiology student program coordinator at OHSU, recently volunteered for two weeks with RAD-AID International at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center in Moshi, Tanzania, with support from the Mark and Janice Kettler Travel Fund, which covers much of the travel and visa costs.

The fund supports travel and other volunteer-related expenses for diagnostic radiology/imaging staff working to improve global imaging services in underserved communities. During her time in Tanzania, Curtin assessed program challenges, developed solutions and created an action plan to launch KCMC’s three-year radiographer diploma program.

Curtin continues to support the program through monthly calls, and hopes to return in December for its launch. She described the experience as humbling, rewarding and career-enhancing.

Emily Hillmer, M.D., a recent graduate from the OHSU School of Medicine; Rhonda Eppelsheimer, M.S.W., an associate professor of pediatrics in the OHSU School of Medicine; and Willi Horner-Johnson, Ph.D., a professor in the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health, had new research published in the Developmental Disabilities Network Journal.

The article, “The Effect of a Preclinical Disability Elective on Medical Student Awareness, Attitudes, and Clinical Competency,” highlights efforts within the OHSU School of Medicine, supported by the University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, to integrate disability education into medical training as a promising model for other programs.
