2023 Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award

2023 Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award

October 01, 2026

David Huang, M.D., Ph.D., co-inventor of the biomedical imaging technology known as optical coherence tomography, or OCT, continues to advance and refine OCT at Oregon Health & Science University’s Center for Ophthalmic Optics and Lasers, which is also known as the COOL Lab. Huang is receiving the 2023 Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award as a co-inventor of optical coherence tomography, or OCT, the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation has announced. The imaging technology known as optical coherence tomography, or OCT, is commonly used to diagnose and manage eye diseases that can cause blindness. This en face image, displayed in a frontal view, is from an OCT angiography scan of an eye with wet age-related macular degeneration, and focuses on the retina, light-sensitive tissue in the back of the eye. Abnormal blood vessel growth is shown in yellow, while normal retinal blood vessels are purple. (OHSU/Yali Jia)

The imaging technology known as optical coherence tomography, or OCT, is commonly used to diagnose and manage eye diseases that can cause blindness. This cross-sectional image is from an OCT angiography scan of an eye with wet age-related macular degeneration, and focuses on the retina, light-sensitive tissue in the back of the eye. The yellow layer represents abnormal blood vessel growth, while normal retinal blood vessels are shown in purple and normal choroidal blood vessels are red. (OHSU/Yali Jia)
